Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Cheers Guys

Always start with the head, just seems the most logical, then again when I go into sculpt I go in reverse and do the body first and the head at the end!

Hey Si,

I'll be giving him a tweek in Z once I get the full body down, taking it nice an slow really (dont have nay time tbh) for this one.

Quite looking forward to doing the fur, be a hell of a lot of maps me thinks, colour, baldness, legnth, direction etc etc....

Never doen em so gd knows how i'll go about it! hehe!

starjsjswars,

WHat animals you done?

None!

First go, Ive made a few humans but never an animal thought doing something really different, skeleton, muscle structure, body mechanics etc etc would be a nice challenge, let alone fur etc.

Might even give mayas muscle a go if I get my head round it.

Im gonna get him set for animation, so ill probably blast out a simple skeleton and give it a quick rig too see any probs before going onto Z and further.

You should post up some pics in the finished work section of your stuff.

Very Possibly mate, though it matches the refs that I've got which are anatomical drawings, but a tweek later shoudnt be a problem.

Very cool, though I agree... The paws need some work. Other than that. Great work!

looking good steve user added image

a couple of things pop out at the minute but you'll probably be addressing them as you progress:
- rear of the jaw line looks too far back on the neck
- more toned forelimb muscles (as lions are rather stocky cats)
- shape of the rump and hind legs could do with a little tweaking
- paws (had to mention those) user added image

I'm guessing that you might get similar problems to my old polar bear with too much fur in references that covers up whats going on underneath.
looking forward to seeing it develop further!

Yeah Si,

Same as whats on my list!

Ive been having a look at our cats and trying to get as much ref of them though there a tad smaller!!

I think I need to sort out a tail then go onto getting the rump going as its seems a bit of an integral part, the jaw I need to have a look into badly as well as sorting out lips for him.

hehe, the paws there quite hard, need to get some good ref..

I'll probably go into Z at some time to sort out the toning on a level 2-3, not too high as theres no need really as far as I can plan, althought Ive never tried fur and dont know how it will go with the displacement map. But i'll try to get a nice looking model prior to going in, if I will.

I might also give the muscle system a go in Extension 1/2 as I plan on animating.

edit - Ohh yeah ive been having a few probs on parts as you said cos of the fur getting the the way!

hey gster - this is looking very nice mate - this should be fun to play with in zbrush.

there are a couple of areas that stand out to me at the moment -
i think the front shoulders are looking a little low and could also do with a bit of beefing up. it may be instead that the whole top half of the lions body is a little high and could be brought down a little. i think the neck really needs to come out from between the shoulders to give it that 'i'm sneaking up on you' cat type posture..

also, i think where the back legs are connecting to the body is looking a little odd - i maybe think it's more the rib cage which really needs to dip inwards a bit more before connecting to the back leg. i also think the wide point of the rib cage could be a little wider.

keep at it mate - this is going to be a cool model.
