Same here at work, not that I model with tris anyway, butanywone who does gets their work back. Renderman likes it perfect. It doesnt mess about. No non manifolds or tris. But it was developed by Pixar as a subd renderer anyway (catmull- clarke), and what happens when you convert any mesh to a subd and back to poly? everything gets quaded - so theres the answer as to why it wants quads - I dont blame it though, tri are just a messy buggers LOL

At this point I am not looking to buy Renderman. I actually like mental ray. I have 32 gig of ram and eight cores spilt in two Xeon CPUs. What I am trying to determine now is how much more performance increase would I get if I got the latest and greatest Xeon CPUs. Or should I wait? I am not really interested in building a render farm.

Renderman being "better" depends on what you need as it is a reyes renderer while MR is a raytracer.:bandit: lol I'm loving this bandit smiley.

I believe I like ray tracing better. I want the most photo realistic images I can get without looking like the typical CGs.

No I know you arent, but Im suggesting it as its far superior. MR is good dont get me wrong, but if you want results fast...you can throw all you like at MR its just slower.

With the spec you want though anything will perform better. At the end of the day its down to processors and ram, the card wont have any effect.

RMan does have raytracing. It is the best renderer on the market and will outperform MR.

wow after all this years trying to master MR i find out renderman is better when i have time i will definately check it out .

Jay, I know it can calc raytracing but its not its strong point. However, it does chomp through displacement and motion blur and the like, and those things can bring MR to a crawl, they just handle it differently. What is really killing MR for Maya right now is the sloppy integration. Both engines are only as good as their ability to fit needs(whatever they may be, animations, arch viz whatever) so it being superior is quite subjective. user added image

If you have dual quad Xeon 3.0ghz+ cores with 32 gigs of RAM and a workstation 3d modeling video card.. you're pretty much set.

Is no need to upgrade. the time increase would be so insignificant it would go unnoticed.

If u want faster renders. You need to check into render farms. Or dial up a service who has renders farms and make business by rendering for people via internet service @ a slight monthly fee.

If u have those specs you listed, and ur frames are taking a minimum of a hour. I WANT TO SEE A FEW RANDOM FRAMES OF YOUR WORK!!! XD

of course. Everything in this game is subjective, isnt it, just like the old addage of what is better, Maya or Max blah blah... this could go round in circles LOL

Yeah it does displacements frightenly fast. the problem with mental ray it retesselates the geometry before the render, which is where the hiccups start. Its just very fussy. One of my colleagues here at work is a bit of a render fiend. He did a test with 4 lots of renderers with the same scene. 3Delight was at 30secs, renderman at 42secs, I think he said vray was a minute and a half and old MR was a staggering 48 minutes yes thats minutes.

Having used both Im currently with Rman, and am actually saving the bucks for it here at home.

I do actually recommend 3Delight as the architecture is like rendermans - and its free to use!!

mental ray stand alone is slightly faster isn't it?

hey guys i think this should be a sticky and where we list all the merits and demerits of render engines

i wonder what maxwell would come out at!

maybe months user added image I think maxwell just cant quite cut it with the ever increasing deadlines in cg i honestly think in the next couple of years they will stop surporting maxwell

Nah, not at all, unless the biased renders really push the limit.

Maxwell will probably go down the GPU route to increase speed and in my mind will always have a place in arch vis.

Theres a strange paradox that although CPU speed has incresed render times have stayed the same over the years, due to the inclusion of more options and features for accuracy and the demand for the inclusion of these.

damn right my friend especially in archviz with the introduction of the fantastic mia materials for them only to take longer to render ...i guess its like the rule of alchemy...to get something you have to give something
