Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Dang, sorry to hear that. You sound like your in good spirits about it though. At least you weren't too far into the project when it crashed. The new redo looks promising so far.

Seems like you're using a spotlight and I think its dampening the scale of the scene, right now it looks like someone is shining one of those keychain flash lights on a miniature set, perhaps you could try a directional light. Ok I'm done being nosey

I used 3 planes with different transparency and found a water texture from cgtextures.com that I used. I will post a screen shot of the hypershade tomorrow when I have access to Maya.

The choice of light type makes it look better but it doesn't have a mood, its dark but it doesn't look like night, you know. The lighting has no temperature so to speak. Apart from that, I think the bump is too brash and paint FX trees would be more believable. Keep at it.user added image

Will keep updating when ever I have a chance to, my classes end next Friday but I only have 3 days off before my next term starts so I wont be doing to much with this project at the moment.

Will keep your advice in mind though, as soon as I have some free time I will see what I can do.

I agree with GecT about the lighting and the trees. Also, what about using fur for the grass? Might make it more believeable, and you can paint baldness maps on it, along with color maps.
