Again, STUNNING :-) ! Photo-real and brilliant. I really like the huge render you posted, I'm able to see the detail great. Excellent lighting & shadows, amazing skill at matching your render to the photo. What is your render time on the single shot? The small purple light casting it's reflection on the small screw driver is great. How did you achieve the star flare around the purple light?
yes.. matching photo and render is really hard, but if you measure everything before it is much easier.. (camera focal lenght, height of camera, position of the lights..... ....)
RENDER
Render took 1hour and 35 minutes on 2 samples with Mental ray (production quality with a bit of optimisation on MAC) for resolution 1710 x 1210 px
Composite
Also the star of the light was created in post production. I just don't know how to create it in Maya if it is possible... For post-production I used Nuke...
And I will try to do a bit twiking more but... there is still one thing that I would love to correct..
You can add that star effect on the light in Maya. It's called the 'Bokeh' effect. I think there's a 'use Bokeh' checkbox somewhere in light's attribute's editor. But I think I'm right in saying that it's a bit like depth of field, it can add alot to render time, and so, you're probably best off doing it however you did it in Nuke, where you'd have more instant control.
Been good to watch this project Serzz. You obviously understand your cameras..
