On a side note, before 9-11, I participated in a thread much like this one on another site, and at the time, I was making GREAT money, able to support myself and my girl, and the LAST place I EVER thought I would be at this time today, is where I am now.

That day screwed EVERYTHING up for me, and people like us, and now we are looked at like beggars when we ask for a job.

I had to take a $1o,ooo dollar pay CUT just to make ends meet,
and I'm treated like shit every day by people who don't even know what the hell it is that we do for them.

People want ILM quality graphics, and effects, at convenience store prices, and I hate to tell them, that it is just not gonna happen untill they spend the cash that they are affraid to spend.

Remember folks, there are LOTS of people that think we just push a button, and make the magic happen.

The next time some a$$hole tells you this, tell them to stay in the theater and actually count the names in the graphics and vfx credits for once.

5. Biggest fear with regards to job: Finding one that will let me pay my bills, and let me afford to take my girl out to see a cheap movie once in a while. That's all.

I'm not looking to get rich.

If you are in this biz looking to get rich, you chose the WRONG bizuser added image

One time last summer during my YEAR-long stint of unemployment, 2 months before I joined SM, a friend and I wen't out to the most busy freeway overpass in Minneapolis wearing sandwich-board signs that said:
Will design milti-BILLION-dollar corporate maketing packages for food.

We ended up on the news that night, and STILL, got no calls.

Right now our country is F*CKING SAD.

Mike, man, I am SOOOO fricken happy for you buddy, and I REALLY hope things stay working for ya.
<end rant>

Good luck all! Just keep modeling and animating your ass off EVERY fricken DAY, and don't get discouraged.

I can only get better....... right?

...sheesh..... I hope so....

Well, I believe the whole dotcom fallout started before 9/11 so I wouldn't put the entire blame there. 9/11 didn't help, of course.

I can relate to how you feel though,....I actually live in NYC and when things were good, they were really good. I was able to go to asia twice in one year for several weeks at a time. Now? Work is patchy at best. At this point, I'd take the pay cut if I could just find a stable day gig with benefits...something that would allow me to come home and concentrate on my 3D skills or any other education I decide to go for. It's a scary feeling when you were on top at one point and now you're flailing along with no direction. Seems I get contract work for several months at a time, then end up unemployed the rest.

My .02 is that if you're working, even if the job sucks and the pay isn't what you're used to....continue to work and keep cranking out resumes for other gigs. At least you have a steady income which is more than alot of other folks, myself included, have.

I have experienced alot of what Rage has went through... for the last 3 years I was a web designer for an investment bank in NYCity... 911 came and I was in the middle of it. we were pretty darn close... and I lost a coworker that day. Things went down hill from that day forward and ultimately my position was eliminated.. fortuately I fell back on my previous ocupation... There are things about my country I dont like, but i am still proud to call myself an American. One of the things I love about this site is the fact that I can interact with such a diverse group of people.... and if you guys start an animation house.... count me in!!! (if I get betteruser added image)

Take me with you (no kidding). I got next to no ties in here so it would be rather easy for me to move user added image

Btw, I was so close to start up my own little CG company. We had almost everything set up with a friend of mine. Then he just peed in his pants and forgot the idea after hesitating it for a year or so... So here I am, in square one, wondering what next... user added image
