Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character
I'm trying to merge these two edges....
...but I get wrong results... one of the edge seems to be flipped 180 degrees in the progress, connecting wrong vertices.... instead of connecting 1 with 3 and 2w4, it connects 1w4 and 2w3.... WHY???

Why are U reading this?
have it reverse the normals and it will clear that up.
You can get it done with merging vertix's like mike sugest. you might have some little problems latter with something though becouse the normals might still not all be right. so if you go with mikes way.. which is nice ! remember to cheak your normals latter.
