This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Matrix Pill

does anyone know where i could get a tutorial for creating those pills from the matrix?
i can model them easy enough but the lighting and shading is pretty hard cos they have that thick specularity and full caustic kinda thing going on and i have no idea how to replicate that in maya user added image

You'll probably want to entertain using SSS with Mental Ray for the pills to look right.

sub surface scattering, but I think that would be overkill.

I'd have to sit down and really take a llok at this (sadly no time for that) but you should be able to get away with using caustics and colour bleeding in mental ray to do it. Or you could fudge it in maya software render it's up to you user added image

Yes I agree that sss would be a bit overkill for this application, damn it looks nice. But you are right, the caustics would make these pills look better (I'm thinking aka Advil Liquigels kinda look).

Good luck with that and post the pills when you get 'em right.

this is the closest i can get to it user added image how do i make it look less bland? it doesnt seem to have much life to it cos it looks very pale? thats because i have a slight transparency on the pill for the caustics to work

Here's my quick stab at the blue pill. It's rough so don't laugh.

Here's another version thats a bit bluer and tweaked a bit more.

I started with a Blinn and tweaked almost every setting on it, adding Caustics and Raytracing.

I found myself making almost a hundred variations of this little pill so I just stopped. You can get infinite results once you start messing with each parameter. If you need the settings I can post them for the last render I did.

had a little play with it, changed the shape of the pill, changed the colour and tweaked some of the light and shader attributes, theres still something not quite right with it....does it look too reflective to you? user added image
