Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

CVX (CVN 21)

Had to design a futuristic aircraft carrier for a poster design. The model was pretty simple, but I liked it. Unfortunately it is appearently "too" futuristic, so I have to do another based on the CVN 21 concept (see link). Unfortunately since one hasn't been built yet all have to go from is the picture in the link. It'll replace the one in this image from the poster design. Have to have it ready for print Monday morning... wish me luck.

Progress on the superstructure (the part that stands above the main deck). On a carrier, this is known as the island. Not putting a great deal of detail, since it will only be about 3 inches long when printed.

basic flight deck and hull. most of the flight deck detail will be done in texture. Haven't decide how much I want to put into the port side catwalks. Not doing starboard since they wouldn't be seen in the printed angle. Taking a break for now. Hope to have this done sometime tomorrow, so that I can continue on the Thing model.

RC, thanks, the theme for the poster was "Building the pacific fleet bridge to the future." Hence the futuristic ships. The portion shown is only about 10% of the whole poster.

Anyway, here's an updated render. Still need to add some vertical elevator markings and dodge/burn some wear and tear, but other than that the flight deck is pretty much done. The aircraft (F-22 raptors) are Mesh Factory 3D clip-art.

Well, I think this is about as done as it's going to get for now. May add a couple different types of aircraft before the final render.
Thanks for following along.

Thanks. I wish I could take credit for the F22s, but they're mesh factory 3d clipart.

No matter. I like the attension to detail with the texturing. Like the burn marks from the afterburners on the catapult. You could improve the lighting if you wanted though. Maybe add it in water and using a color and reflect map to add wake with foam from the sea? Maybe play with sky images placed on an plane that is only visible in the reflections for the water to also reflect? It is like an HDRI fake. Have you every played with rendering it with Mental Ray? You could add some nice soft lighting with FG and GI? another thing that adds to the feel of size is using a camera with a strong perspective or destortion from a wide angle lens. The lower the number of MM the lens is the higher the perspective it adds.

RickStefani,
Great suggestions all. I've kept the model to play with, but for work it went well. It was composited into a poster for confence. Haven't really messed with light in depth yet, but I'll get there user added image

Thanks again.

here's the full poster design for anyone interested. It's pretty busy, but I had to include certain items whether I wanted to or not. Items will look small here, but final print as 24"x36".

Looking good man!

If I may ask who do you work for Cannon? You seem to do the same kind of stuff that I do though now I don't really do any print because 3D is blowing up here user added image but I did do a ton of print stuff at one time.

D.
