hard/soft ware rendering

Hi!
I noticed that you can render particles by normal software rendering, if you adjust the particle shape to clouds. But if you want the particles to be just points, you have to render the scene whit hardware render buffer. My graphic-card is prety old and every time I try the hardware render buffer, my whole computer crashes. Is there some other way to render them, besides hardware render buffer?

May I ask which graphics card?

(Age is a LOT less important than model...)
