Boolean > Union Problem

Hi folks....I'm currently running through the Cartoon Dog tutorial and I'm trying to create a union between one of the dogs legs and his body....when I do this....both the body and the leg disappear. Ive checked to be sure that the leg intersects the body all the way around its perimeter but still wont merge....any suggestions? Here are some screens of the layout
