Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Boolean problem

I've been trying to follow Kurt Boutilier's CartoonDog Tutorial (it's excellent) but I'm in troubles with a boolean union operation.
The tutorial says you have to build some nurbs objects for the head, body, legs, arms and tail.
Then you have to convert those boolean objects to polygons and union them one by one.
I've just booleaned the head with the neck, then with the body and then with the tail. Now, when I try to union it with one of the arms both the booleaned body and the arm disappear.
I've just gone thru the forum and checked previous similar problems. Both objects are intersecting and both normals are in the same direction.
Can anybody tell me what I have done wrong?

You wanna try this; Edit NURBS>reverse Surface Direction. I hope it helps=).

I got it working all I did was cut the dog body in half then selected both the leg and half body Edit Polygons> normals> conform> select leg> enter> select body> Polygons> booleans> union.

Hi Kurt!

Are you the same Kurt who posted that excellent tutorial? If that's true, thank you for doing so. When we see you working arround we can see how maya is wonderful and how you are familiar with it.

Your tip worked fine for me. I had to try it many times because it wasn't working at first.
If after cutting the body in two I deselect all and then select the body and the leg again (as you tought me to do) Boolean Union didn't work.

What I had to do was select both the body and the leg BEFORE cutting the body and (without deselecting those poly) immediately apply boolean union. That way it worked fine.

Is it ok this way I did?

Why couldn't I do as you did in your tutorial?
Perhaps I have any wrong configuration?

Well, problem solved. Thanks again for your help and, again, my sincere congratulations for so excellent tutorials.

Yes Im the same Kurt who did the tut.

Glad you have solved the problem... Boooleans can be very tempermental at time... I had some models that no matter what i did booleans ouldn't work even though i know everything is set up right.
