The rumors of Habib "Particle Man" Zargarpour leaving ILM have been confirmed.
His next destination? Electronic Arts in Vancouver.
If there is ANYONE out there that knows the ins-and-outs of the MAYA particle module, (formerly Dynamation), it's Habib.
Habib Zargarpour began his career in 1993 as the technical director for "The Mask". He quickly gained a reputation as the "Particle Man" since he created the green cloud of gas for a key shot in "The Mask".
Since then, he's been involved at ILM in the production of such feature films as THE MUMMY, (scarab beetle particle animation), Star Trek: Generations, Jumanji, Twister, Star Trek: First Contact, Spawn Star Wars: Episode I and II, and many many more.
Hmm...Maybe he had his reasons to leave but I think ILM can survive w/o him
Btw, the guy is absolutely awesome. I just got the Maya: Secrets of the Pros book and there is a complete chapter written by him where he talks about creating the Perfect Storm effects. The dedication and devotion they put in creating the effects is really stunning! It's not about pushing the buttons hoping to eventually get nice results. It's about getting deep inside the essence of the effect you're trying to replicate...
(ehm...i should stop drinking these leftover beers and go to sleep right now. working day tomorrow :/)

And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning,
E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
True, but at ILM, he was the man to go to for VERY complex particle shots, and now that he's gone, ILM's particle team has to go on leaderless at least for a while.
Not only did he create, and concept most of the particle shots he worked on, he also developed most of the proprietary Maya particle plugins for them.
He will be missed is all
