Leftover lattices

I'm building a simple face with subdivision surfaces in polygon proxy mode. I delete history when the command line tells me to watch out for tweaks. I use extrude edge, split polygon and append polygon.

I get these lattices building up. What are they and can I, should I get rid of them? They get in the way so I can't grab vertexs anymore.

I use Maya 4 on PC, sometimes Mac.

Thanks,

Robert

Or if its really a Lattice Deformer, just do Edit-Delete By Type (with lattice selected)-History.
