Maya 6 or maybe 6.5 added the Tri count to the polycount display. Previous polycount displays only counted the number of faces.

If you're asking how to get it to show up, go to Display > Heads Up Display > Polycount.

faces are 4 sided, 5 sided 3 sided, any sided, those are faces, tries take all the faces and sees how many it would be if they were all 3 sided faces

So you type a longer explaination than the fix itself?

Triangles are simply 3-side geometric figures where faces can have any conceivable amount of sides. Games generally use triangles though some are starting to warm up to the notion of Quads.

P.S. -- I use 6.0 and I have triangle count in my HUD -- so its 6.0, not 6.5

games aren't warming up to quads so much as most modern engines will triangulate the model for you upon importing it, rather than you having to do it yourself.
