I've been doing some research on your project and i came up with some new workarounds. Final Gather still doesnt work but i got the occlusion to render.

Im still looking for a way to do this with final gather. Please help if you know how.
Please take note that the above renders are not done with final gather or GI or GI Joe

this was a suprisingly fast render considering i read that some people are taking 4 and 5 min to get supposed similar results.
1 min 16 secs.

hmm, sorry, I dont really understand what your talking about because I am new but I like what youve done with the fur. Its just the right amount of scraggle, although the colour makes it not look real. If it was brown it would look like fur.
hope whatever it is that is bothering you will work itself out,

bobalie,
I was talking about an event called ambient occlusion. In real life two non luminous surfaces that pass or collide with each other constrict the flow of radiant light energy causing a dark shadow between them. some 3d renderers have settings that simulate this for photorealistic effects.
in maya 6 (not sure about 7) final gather does not illuminate fur. so you may notice some trouble trying to get realistic results from furry models. to solve this you need to attach an additional occlusion shader to the fur object and adjust its setting manually. with a little research you can find the shaders on the net, or in regards to maya 7 one is built into it.
I cant wait to update.

Huh- never knew that v6 FG doesnt do fur. But, like u did, an AO pass would do the trick.
But- doesnt maya tesselate fur into polys b4 rendering? Just curious.
Anyway- instead of FG- can't use GI? I mean, FG is a re-approximation of a photon map to ensure accurate results. Without a GI photon map, I can't really tell how it does GI, possible accumulated Monte Carlo sampling??? no clue.
Anyway- wouldn't simple photon map get the same effects-
oh wait, you are going for speed. Well then you are right, AO would be the fastest.
Well the fur looks cool with AO . Nice discovery!
