Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Rendering Challenge- Anyone?

Hey, I didn't know where to post this- but this was a mini rendering challenge at CGtalk a while ago and I felt as though we should do it as well.

Here is the page with all of the files- anyone that wants to join in just post their stuff here.

https://forums.cgsociety.org/showthre...elry+challenge

I'll be starting my own in Indigo user added image soon

I am- I just need a break :p

But- as I said, I have a full weak of staying home in front of me, and nothing else to do, oh well. I'm gonna work on the MP3 player now.

Also- I might try this thing with Mental Ray too.

well are you using the emmiters that they are giving?

Looks pretty nice. You might want to brighten the main emitter, but if you are using Multilight that shouldn't be a problem.

I would'nt render it for 100 hours... that might be a bit overkill... the guy with Indigo 0.4 did his for 100 hours.

Also- the gold ring's materials is a bit dull, but all in all your scene is looking very well. user added image

Here's mine so far- after about 30 minutes.

I have all of the things that Thomas An put up at CGtalk, well, at least they are in formation.

Nobody else wants to join in but me and Joop?

I wouldn't mind trying a bit of rendering, but I need to be able to use my computer and when rendering I can't do anything else. Plus mental ray doesn't work on my machine, I don't know much about rendering and my computer is generally a slug. So ask me again in a couple of months when I have a new computer (hopefully)
I have to say, that despite rubbish picture quality your render looks more realistic already Matt.

Thanks Farbtopf

Well, if you are really gonna go for 100 hours, I'm gonna go ahead and say that you will reach SL 30 at least user added image Cmon, thats 6000 minutes... with 100,000 polys.

But, see, the reason I, no offense, don't like your render so much... is because of the stuff on the guidelines.

And- doesn't Maxwell have complex IOR materials too? Why don't you use them and spend 100 hours of rendering on them instead of on phongs (sorry, I've been following the Maxwell forums for about a month now, and I CAN'T WAIT 'till they cmoe out with a trial version).

Origionally posted by Thomas An
1 - 'V' shaped high definition caustic on silver ring
2 - Smooth (non splotchy) glowing blurry reflection on the silver coin
3 - Smooth (non splotchy) caustic reflection on the surface of the ground plane between the two coins
4 - Smooth (non splotchy) glowing blurry reflection on the right-hand silver coin
5 - Glow on golden ring (at location 5) interacting with location 4

Mine isn't that great either, but by the next few days, I sure hope that it will be great.

Anyway, mine is clearing up great, at 3hrs 19 minutes, already at 1000 mutations per pixel. I'm gonna leave it one for about 6-7 more, or at least 'till the glossy reflections of a glossy reflection user added image clear up.

no, I just took the two planes that the cgtalk post said were area lights, and I made them Indigo Meshlights.

Mine's almost done cooking, two or three more hours for the caustics to clear up a tink bit more.

later,
-Matt
