Livid's Oliphant

Well here we are again. Im going to try and model the Oliphant from Kurt's fantastic tutorial.

I am only at the end of the third video so still rather early in the whole thing but it should be fun.

Remember guys that I hate organic modelling and have probably been putting a project of like this for too long.

Well with the default excuses over and done with it's time to move on.

Well it looks like I have my first problem.

I have just attached the tail but now I can't convert to sub-d's.

There is no red error flash or anything like that so I am a bit confused.

in display - custom poly display ...do you have border edges set to 5 and to show them ? then look at tail and see if there are dark lines then it shows it is not attached correctly ...i am not at maya right now but sure that is where to look ....happens alot when using booleans and attaching things

there should be none thick lines near tail cause it is not the end of the edge ..it needs to be joined if you see any there. .

i learned this from Happymat ... I always keep it set to 5 now and on ....

if that doesnt work can you post a pic with what is described above ?

It's fully attached properly. I have also deleted the history as well.

Strange ... and so early on as well

sounds like you might have extra faces or vertices around that area... You can also delete one small row of faces around the area where the tail meets the body and then double check the faces edges and vert's to make sure you dont have extras. Then exturde over again and re merge.

didnt see kurt post this up ..was writing it while he replied

might be verticle faces ..i check by just spacebar and verticle faces and look for any with double face ... and then just delete it and redo it ...append poly

That's sorted it cheers (both of you).

Not sure why that was, must have just been a bad face or something. Right, onwards.

Right guys, I have a problem.

During the space between video 5 and 6 Kurt obviously did some more work on the face and the eye.

It's looking pretty smart and so I was trying to emulate that but I just can't see it in the video when it goes to wireframe.

Can anyone give me some advice on it.

Cheers

maybe try some of the edges on the left side of the eye
that stick out so far.
to not get such a hump.
move it a little to the left and back, maybe it then looks a bit better

Ok guys, got another problem for you. This one is a bit weird.

While working on the foot i noticed that I had some edges that were transparent. i.e, everything else was shaded but theirs were wireframe. So I pulled them away and saw that they were attached to some more. I keep pulling until I pulled a complete copy of my elephant away.

So I deleted all the edges and verts that I could to try and get rid of it but I am left with this one last face. When I select it it also selects the main elephant and vice versa. I can't delete it. I can make it into one vert but it won't merge with one from the main elephant. I have tried to separate but that comes up with an error message.

This is doing my nut, any suggestions?

not sure if this will help but i had it happen on my dragon ...

1. i just viewed faces and then it allow me to delete it ... (which I am sure you did that already )

2. if i could not delete it ..I just seen it would join the dragon ..I append poly and make it totally join the dragon and then i went back and deleted the outer half and then the other face .

3 ..if nothing else worked ..I just made a poly sphere and joined it to the face or grouped it to the face all by itself and then seperate it and then deleted it ...

hope that helps ....

just from my experience it worked for me ..hope it works for you
