New scene Problems

Hi guys, Everytimei start up a fresh scene i appear miles away from the grid or origin. In fact when i place a primitive in the scene i cannot see it or the grid, even if i hit f or a. I've had a play with some of the settings but nothing is helping, any ideas?

regards

I dont think it has anything to do with the grid scale, when i start maya up you are usually greeted with the grid, i am not which is perculiar as its always turned on. So i added a primitive in the scene and cannot see it, i press f and a and nothing, even the poly count remains 0. really perculiar, it appears quite a few of my usual settings have gone 'tits up', like i cannot adjust the settings of any primitive in the small channel editor. Any way i can completely revert back to factory settings? I've just done a complete reinstall and its still the same

deleting (home)/maya/(version)/prefs/userPrefs.mel might help -> uses defaults the next time you launch maya
