Rendering questions?

I am relatively new to rendering, well I've dabbled around altering settings, played with GI, HDR etc, but would not say I am apt in the field. I have read some posts regarding other rendering solutions such as maxwell and indigo, now could someone fill me in on these? what are they, are they better than mayas rendering, do they run inside maya?

Cheers
