bump artifacts

hello everyone
when i want to create a bump map in photoshop, i use the colour map, turn it to greyscale and use that, thats how ive seen it done, but ive noticed that if i convert a solid colour to greyscale, it doesnt come out with a solid grey, you get nasty artifacts across the entire grey map which makes the texture in maya look like a rough brick texture, i have to redo all the textures in grey so they come out nice and smooth in maya. does anyone else have this problem or am i doing it wrong?
please help, how does everyone else do theres?

what method do you use? desaturate is the best, because it doesnt modify anything but the color. try that
