Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Map a circle image on top of a round convex nurbs surface

I tried te nurbs texture tool but could not get a square to fit

I think it is the curse of nurbs. I would convert the nurbs surface in question to a polygon surface, and use planar mapping.

But I hope someone has an other answer for this question of yours as I enjoy working with nurbs.

I later resorted to mapping the planar trim which is behind the convex glass part and this is what I got (I like it ):
