Car Modeling by Kurt Boutilier Showing error with me

Hi guys,
I am guided by Mr Kurt Boutilier of SimplyMaya.com in modeling a BMW car. At some point in the tutorial he asks me to combine all the polygonal objects using the Mesh-Combine menu item. And after that he performs the merging of all vertices of those combined objects, and eventually after so much of editing he instructs me to separate the objects using Mesh-Separate menu item. Until this point i was really able to cope up with him ,but when it came to separate the objects it gives me error "Error: polySurface1 has only one piece. Ignored." . And for my tutor it got separated. I dont know whether he did anything in between that i couldn't notice. I tightly watched the video oh that part numerous times but i couldn't get through. I tried the same by creating some other objects, but it gives me the same error. God, I am really stuck up. And this is the tutorial i really wished to do. Anybody who could help me resolve this, please help.
Thankyou
Regards
Sumchans.

Did you delete history?

That's the only reason I can think that will have caused your issue.

I did this tutorial and I have to ask, did you select the faces you want to extract from one another to make separate pieces? I am sure you are, just a thought.

Challenge me and I will try. Because If I should fail, failure also has a prize (Knowledge).

Mesh-Separate Showing error

No i dint delete the history. Would that be the problem? I read the maya help, in that it specifies that objects that are merged through their vertices cannot be splitted again. And if to do so, you have some other procedure to get completed before doing the Separation. Please reply.
thankyou
