I have the "Learning Maya 2008 The Modeling & Animation Handbook."

Turns out the class I'm taking that required the book doesn't even use it. So I use it on my spare time to get back to basics again.

I would say you do need some proper knowledge of maya before using this book. But in any other terms I really enjoyed the projects the book has you do.
