Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

You need to go into your render globals and set the start and end frame of your animation. Rendering to avi in Maya isn't the best option though. It's better to render out your animation as an image sequence using tif or tga and import into compositing software such as After effects and render to AVI from there.

ok.

So, if I have multiple frames, and render it as a tif, then the whole sequence will be in there? user added image

well, you have to tell it your start and end frames. You'll also want to give it a file name at the top, and usually choose "frame.#.ext" as the format.

Also, keep in mind that if your animation is over 9 frames long (as in 10+) you want to give it a frame padding of at least 2. If over 99 frames (100+) give a frame padding of 3.

This is all done in the Render Globals by the way. user added image

you don't set the image format to .avi. You set it to .tga or .tiff or something. That will give result in a sequance of images. If you have 90 frames, you'll have 90 images. You'll then take those into one of the programs that we mentioned earlier or another one and create an avi with it.

As for it only rendering the one frame, try Optimizing your Scene size (File > Optimize Scene Size). If that still doesn't work, I've seen that selecting all your objects and exporting them to a new file work in such an occurance. If neither of them work, I'm not sure.

Remember, though, that selecting an .avi format will only render one file.... an avi file. Maybe that was what it was doing.

Good luck!

This might be silly but I wanted to check anyway: Are you using the batch renderer? user added image
