Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Dango77 Virtual Cityscape :Patchwork House

Hi to all, only just joined and am new to Maya and the whole 3d modelling world but have been looking for a project to work on so i can practice, hope it's ok to join in, i know it's a bit late in the game but i'll give it a go, planning on building a "Patchwork" house,a building thats been put together by loads of different designers that all have conflicting tastes, hopefully i'll get the time to do it! Will post wip's as and when.

The first stages of modeling, will be adding more floors,i know the styles don't look very "patchwork" at the moment but it will do,texturing will help which i'm not looking forward to as i'm only just learning!

welcome to the wonderful magical world of maya and the forums

that's a cool model you got there

you should soften the edges around the rounded part of the truncated cone roof thing
select the roof, select the edges, hold down shift and right click then go to hard/soften edges and let go of right click on soften edge
that way it will look smoother

that's a "Ch" pronounced as a "K"

Computer skills I should have:
Objective C, C#, Java, MEL. Python, C++, XML, JavaScript, XSLT, HTML, SQL, CSS, FXScript, Clips, SOAR, ActionScript, OpenGL, DirectX
Maya, XSI, Photoshop, AfterEffects, Motion, Illustrator, Flash, Swift3D

Thanks Perfecto, was trying to think how to do a Cityscape without building a whole city, and thought why not combine a city into one building! here's another wip, more to come soon...

Main shape is done, will probably spend this evening refining it and adding more and more and more.... Once you get going it's so hard to take a break! Can't decide on the garden and surrounding area, i think maybe set into a hill with some stairs and a swimming pool, any ideas are welcome!

Have been up all night doing bits and pieces to me model, but have run into a problem i can't work out, planar mapping is working fine along the x-axis and i'm quite happy with the results, but y and z just keep stretching and putting the checkers on isn't helping, the shader just goes black, any help would be much appreciated!

lookin good man user added image

as for the uv problem, you've gotta planar map each wall from it's respective axis individually, so if the walls facing towards the x axis, do it from the x, from the z, do it from z, ectuser added image probably could be better explained by someone else thoughuser added image

you need to unwrap your UVs. this tutorial might help you understand what i mean, although i've never read it. if its crap; i'm sorry!

planar mapping works in which ever and only direction you aim it. so right now you have projected it in the x direction

Thanks acid44, unfortunately what you explained is exactly what i have been trying, it maps fine from each axis and in the uv editor it's all good, it's just when it comes to putting it back onto a new shader that it's not having it. Thanks anyhow, i'll struggle onward somehow! :angery:

Thanks Hammer.horror, not a bad tutorial but i was already up to date with what was in it,cheers anyway. It's just weird, even with the y or z axis checked in the options box it still seems to be projecting in the x axis! Hope i get it sorted soon, only wanted to do a little bit of texturing to get me inspired to model the garden!

Will give it a go H.H, not entirely sure of what i'm doing when it comes to the whole unfolding, i was just mapping it, scaling it a bit to fit in the box, making sure there were no overlapping edges and saving it out, will experiment a little....
