Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Spaceship Challenge: Earthing Troop Transport

After getting a taste for these challenges from doing the previous one, I'm going to attempt this as well. It's a great idea for a challenge but I'm going to have to get on with it, as i know I'm going to run out of time like in the last one.
I was struggling to come up with any spaceship design, and then decided to limit myself to 2 cubes, 2 spheres and 2 plans.
Here's the idea that i came up with. Still obviously at the early concept stage, but I'm going to let the model and design evolve as i model and texture. It's going to be a Earthing Troop transport large enough to fit a large squad and deploy them in to the heart of battle.

Good luck to everyone taking part

Hi all,
Here's an update of my spaceship. As i thought the design has evolved and i'm more happy with it, it looks less like Starbug from Red Dwarf now. I've finished blocking out the proxy model and deciding about what to do next.
There's some great looking spaceships taking form and all seem to be on a larger scale then my little transport ship.
Ii either start to work on the interior of this spaceship - which is my first plan of action and decided if i need some kind of large carrier that will travel between worlds and take this troop carrier and other fighter spaceships in it.

it not about the size - its about the love put into it. You have some lovely detail on this and looks a lot better than the original concept. Just because some off us are making supersized monsters (sorry about that) does not mean yours is any less of a ship. If you worried about the details then model the buttons and wires - any little detail you think will help your entry.

The up side of having a smaller scale ship is the textures - do you know hard it is going to be texturing my monster.

Its look cool the way it is and is def on the right path.

Hehe your concept did look like starbug. Did you know I worked with Danny John Jules (Kat) last year on a hiphop video - guy is a legend.

Thanks, it does mean alot when you get positive commets on the work you are doing - even if it is something you enjoy doing.
Working on the interior of the ship and beacause it is a smaller ship (tweetytunes - you're monster is growing by the post, along with Dango77's) i'm going to go to town on the details of everything.
The texturing i'm not really looking forward to - but then again i never really look forward to texturing - until in get in to it.

TweetyTunes, it must of been great working with Danny John-Jules, how did you land that gig?

Chirone, you must check out Red Dwarf. Do yourself a favor and buy (at least) the first 2 series on DVD - one of the best things we had British TV

i'm not about for the next couple of days, so hope to finish blocking out the interior by the weekend.

After a bit of work on the interior i've finished the proxy model.
Here's a view of the interior looking forwards towards to cockpit area.
I still need to work on the doors, but i'll work on the details now i'm going back over the whole model and refining it.

Looking back towards the rear of the ship.
The seats, control panel and stairs still need alot of work, but i'm happy with the style and scale of everything.
The whole model is just under 60,000 polys, so there's alot to play with when it comes to detailing it all. I've got one eye on how i'm going to texture this and looking forward to getting to that stage.

Whyte, nice work. I like your modeling and ideas. Looks like more than just 'just a bit of work' you did. And the scene is not growing out of hand with poly's.

Challenge me and I will try. Because If I should fail, failure also has a prize (Knowledge).

Thanks oldhippie Tom. I feel more happy with the design and enjoying working on this project. The low res model I'll keep in case i go ahead with a small animation idea i got, but for now it's all about making the Hi Res version with the detail.

Coldwave, this wasn't something i originally planed to do and the idea just evolved with the design. From looking around at the other models it's something different that not everyone will do. Maybe this is thinking outside the box???

anyway here's an update on my progress.
I've finished making the hi-res version of the seats for the troops and modelled in the internal armour plating and support beams that run all along the inside of the ship.
Next up is the stairs and walkway to the cockpit area and rear gun turret.

Once I've finished all the internal parts I'll move back out to the exterior of the ship and refine the Hull, Wings and Boosters. It's going to take a little while and texturing should be interesting, but as i said I'm having fun with this and that's the main thing.

Looking really good Whyte, as for thinking outside the box, you're thinking inside the box really... lol, you're the only one modeling the inside of your ship as far as I can see!
And it's looking cool!

Keep it up, it's only getting better.

Ps, are you going to model the soldiers too... That would be something!
