Joint problem - translation axis - driving me crazy

just wasted my entire sunday evening trying to figure this out and i'm stressed to the max.

i rigged and skinned and animated a character for a game...

for some reason the local rotation axis is correct, i manually set the local joint rotation to be correct and pointed in the right direction, but in "move" mode the arrow handles show the local axis and not the same as the local joint axis.

does anyone know how to make these handles point down the joint?
