Maya's default smoothing leaves extra wireframes?

user added image

I recently discovered this when I default smooth with the 2 key. Why do I see extra caged wireframes on the model and if possible can I remove them??

Thank you.

Well the 2 button gives you a smooth preview with the original poly wireframe around it, as you've got pictured... 3 is the smooth preview without the wireframe mesh.

If you're asking about something further, not sure what the problem is...
