Maya fur- Baldness/length maps not working

I'm currently trying to add fur to my anteater and I want either very short hair around the mouth/eyes or non at all. At first I used the paint fur attributes tool to try and do it and then I tried using photoshop. The fur responds in real time as expected (Ie gets shorter) but when rendered there is no change with either method. I also tried pressing update fur maps and my UVs are laid out. Am I missing something?
Any help will be greatly appreciated

If you are using metalray you might need to change the quality to production, this is what I had to do with hair..........dave

Sorry elephantinc finding it hard to understand what you are saying, are you trying to animate the hair getting longer or are applying it to your model ok but its not rendering.........dave
