normals angle

I've got a fuzzy edge around this geometry -- I've recently discovered normals and have tried manually adjusting the angle of the edges; soften/harden edge; unlock etc. but to no avail.

the problem started when I extruded back the edges to create a lip. I've also creased edges to retain the square shape...

What happens if you go Normals>Conform, then Normals> Set to face?

acid -- nothing, still the same.

I've sorted it though, seems it needed a little extra geometry - I added a few edge loops towards the edges and it fixed it right up....?

I am seeing thick lines implying border edges. Go to lighting and turn off 2 sided lighting and verify that you do not have non-manifold geometry. Run the clean geometry tool under mesh and verify you do not have any non-manifold geometry.

Looking at the image again I am sure you have non-manifold geometry causing the render artifacts. Go to mesh cleanup and check select affect components and non-manifold geometry, and laminar faces.

I don't think there was any non-manifold geometry. the thick line you see are edge creases. i think it was a combination of low poly, smooth-preview and the sharp creases causing trouble. once i put in a few extra loops everything was fine

oh darn sorry I did not see you say you were using poly creasing. That is really prone to creating normal artifacts and yes you have to end up adding edges to clamp the creased edges which practically defeats the purpose of edge weighting (ie creasing).
