Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Newbie : hardware texturng problem

Hi all!

First of all, sorry, I post this here as I don't know where else to post....

I have a problem :
SUper simple model - a pack of milk. rendering is ok with all kind of shading and lighting. But when I smooth the model, it doesn't "work" with hardware texturing - goes pitch black, renders with maya software, not with hardware, same goes for the persp view; renders fine with "use default lighting" but not with "use all lights" while all other models are just fine....?

subsequent question : which rendering options are best for a picture / movie?

Thanks!

what's more, if I just add one simple loop ring edges to it with edge ring loop tool, it goes blank (pitch black in all aspects)...? Is it a memory cache problem? Geometry? Texture? Please Help!

When you select use all lights do you actually have lights in the scene? Any why are you rendering with hardware rendering, generally i'd only use that for particles.

If you upload your scene file I'm sure someone will be good enough to let you know what has gone wrong.

Thanks Dave!

Yes, I have a couple of directional lights, and one ambiant light.

In the picture is the initial model, just fine, and smoothed one, black.

Now, If I do something as simple as cutting one single face with split polygon tool, the model goes black in ytthe viewports, and renders black as well, or rather texture-less.

This is not a texture issue, as the texture works fine on other models, and the model reacts the same with dfferent textures.

Now why render with Hardware Maya? Not sure - in the end I am aiming at a movie, so a series of IFF images that I would like to be of good quality...

Any advices?
