Cathedral Interior

Hello!
WIP - Modelled in Maya. Unfortunately I had to export this to render in Cinema 4d as Mental Ray kept crashing due to the large polygon count. Still need to tie up a few loose ends….

Thanks for the comments.
No I hadn't thought of using proxies! - just instances. I'll give that a try. I'm sure the crash problem is due to my uneconomical modelling.

Yea even in C4D I load up proxies for large scale scenes through lo/hi res XRef's. They are a life saver as long as you are not doing complex destruction.

"Can someone tell me what Proxies are?"

You can export a complex piece of geo as a mental ray object (.mi file) and then create a simple piece of base geo (proxy) in its place and have it reference the complex geo, then when you render with Mental ray the base geometry is replaced by your render proxy in the render view.

Using render proxies can cut down translation time and memory usage in several ways. First of all, complex geometry is never loaded into Maya. It is only loaded into mental ray if necessary. If the proxy is occluded or behind another object or behind the camera, then it is not loaded. Also, the texture file associated with the render proxy is not loaded unless the proxy is.

Wow that's cool I've used poly planes with .png 's to mimic that same kind of thing but you lose alot of detail unless you have really nice bump and occlusion maps Ill have to look into using proxies instead

Does anyone have any good quick and dirty tuts on using them?

Looks good. Though I think you could lose a little geo on the upper arches. When you compare the geo to the other curved/circular bits theres nearly double the loops

Hi
It's loosely based on some Champagne Cathedral images I downloaded from the internet so I haven't really done much research.
I'm carrying on in Cinema4d as I'm not displeased with the results although the render engine doesn't compare to Mental ray (in my opinion) for realism. The scene has one sky shader and ambient occlusion which seems to work for old brickwork. Textures from cgtexture.com.

Update

Here's where I'm at if anyone is interested. Don't yet know what to do with the windows. Also a bit of texture blur going on in the foreground.
