To use Character Sets or not...

What you see are two of five characters I've rigged. Thoughts on the following: Should I be using Character Sets? There aren't very many controls. The evil zigzag block has the most and he only has 10 or so, depending on how you want to count them. A number of controls are in extra attributes for some of them too... blend shapes fro eyes and the like.

I've never used Character Sets, and I have to be ready to start animating on Tuesday. I also have a number of other projects that need doing. Will character sets be too much trouble to learn for the return on investment?
