Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

deforming an object

hey guys, is it possible to deform a mesh into a sphere?? like for instance, if i had a large honeycomb flat mesh and i wanted to warp that into a sphere or as close to it??

cheers

Yes. Blend shape plus a wrap deformer.

Expect to get distortion though. For proof look at any planar projections of the earth.

Also a sphere is going to be tricky because it wraps on itself. Hemispherical projections are easier. So it would be much easier to do this in two halves.

To do this in one piece, you'll need to start with the sphere and flatten it. Which means you'll most likely have to unwrap it as if you were making a planar projection. Then you can make a blend shape between the sphere and the flattened sphere, and finally you can use the flattened sphere with the attached blend shape node as a wrap deformer on your honey comb surface.

To work though the honey comb surface has to match the flattened sphere.

This is a variation on a theme I made a tutorial for here ...

and here is a slightly refined version...

hey ctbram thanks for the reply, funny enough i was watching those tutorials the other day, but it never clicked that i could use the blend shapes in this way.
thanks so much

just saw this tutorial from your fine self as well ""maya holes in cylinder tut wNarration"" , thats kind of where my thoughts came from, because i said to myself its easy enough to get a cylinder using bend deformers, or even crazy shapes from lattice deformers, but how do you wrap it into a sphere. lol
again cheers user added image

Thanks for the kind words. The vids are really not polished as I just kind of do them off the top of my head and I tend to ramble a bit so they are always longer then I'd like but hopefully there is some useful nuggets in them.

Anyways, there are a lot of sharper tacks in the box then myself in this forum so maybe someone might have a better solution. There are lots of ways to do things in maya.

The sphere is tricky to do in one piece. It's a little easier to do it in two halves because it's easier to get flatten a hemisphere then a sphere.

It would be nice if there was a way to simply drape a shape around another shape and minimize distortion. I have been toying with the idea of using ncloth and then using the ncloth object as a wrap deformer.

That will be another project to experiment on. I think I can get a better work flow and better end result for conforming one shape to another for hemispherical shapes using ncloth as a wrap deformer.
