Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Mirroring problem

I am trying to practice with the mirror tool but it is not working. Instead of duplication the polygon cube on the opposite side it duplicated within the cube, just like it would if you just pressed ctrl + D.

I tried to mirror via edit>duplicate special> etc..

No idea what i'm doing wrong. :/

Use the mirror tool in the mesh menu, if you model is in +x you need to mirror in the -x.............dave

Oh thank you, Dave. That worked but now that caused another problem. When I model the original side, the mirror side doesn't copy what's happening. -__-

Dave, I think the problem is when I use this method it doesn't mirror them as two seperate objects. I can't just select one side without selecting the other, even though I unlicked "merge with original" in the settings box.

I don't believe the mirror geometry tool creates an instance, which is what you'd need to have the shape update. Try setting the pivot point to the origin, then enter -1 in the X scale in the duplicate special options. Right now there's no change in transform (i.e. rotate and translate are 0 and scale is 1) so there won't be any change in position.
