RIP Gerry Anderson

Don't know how many of you guys know who he is, I have a feeling that Gerry Anderson productions are before a lot of your time.

But HE was a great contributor to the Sci Fi genera from the 50's till recent times with iconic shows like Space 1999, Thunderbirds, and UFO among others.

His visionary shows helped Traditional Miniature makers create designs that inspire our current generation of CG artists and FX studio employee's even now.

He will be missed along with others of his kind who are sadly passing away and leaving us with a large void in original and inspiring creations for TV.

George

Wow thanks for posting George. Another childhood memory fades away.

My Dad worked on Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet (original series) I was exposed to lots of footage on 35mm film through a movieola editing machine during my summers holidays spent at the studios with my Dad. I still have some footage here at the house on a reel somewhere of a puppet drowning in a cave.

Although Gerry Andersons name is synonymous with all this stuff, the alleged brains behind it all was his first wife Sylvia.

A sad loss though, I believe he had dimentia. A good friend of mine who is a film producer knew Gerry Anderson personally, and told me a horrific story a few weeks back...really very scary.

RIP Gerry Anderson,

Jay

And yet another childhood hero goes ...

I shed a tear and raised a glass in his memory today. I grew up on a diet of Thunderbirds, Joe 90 and Stingray (not on their first outing) and Space:1999

There's an obit over at the Register that gives a little background: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12...anderson_dies/

Sad that so many of these visionaries have been lost to us now, Irwin Allen, Ralph Mcquarrie. I also find it disheartening that most of the ones we have left for example Martin Bower (very talented and amazing Miniature builder from the 70's, He built nearly ALL of the mini's used for Space 1999 for example) are unable to preform their work any longer. I feel lucky to have lived in this time to have experienced this Era of creativity, But i am saddened to have to witness its passing as well. I hope that one day someone will come along and fill the void that is being left by the passing of these great minds.

Let us not forget Derek Meddings also, this guy was an absolute legend!! He was part of the Gerry Anderson gang at one time. I remember visiting his office at Shepperton Studios a year or so after his passing, and was shown the original Batwing model from Tim Burtons Batman movie, it was mounted on a wooden base and sat on a shelf.
