Car tires with displacement map

Hi all,

I had again a discussion with a guy regarding the fact that he is modeling for games (Farming Simulator) and in order to save several polys he is not modeling the tread of tires for tractors and trailers but doing that with a displacement map. Unfortunately he is not willing to show me that (if one has such friends the he need no enemies anymore user added image).
Is there somebody who can show me how to do this? If there is a short video tutorial I would be very happy!

Many thanks in advance for your help.

It's worth pointing out the you would be best reading up on bump and normal maps, rather than displacement maps, for what you want to achieve here.

cheers

If you were to model both a high res tyre and low res tyre, you could try and apply the principals shown in this video:

Maya Normal Map Tutorial (Video Game WorkFLow) - YouTube

I found this one with a very quick google search, so not sure how good it is. If you spend some time searching (and also just reading up on the principals of normal mappinig) you will probably find others to suit your needs,

best,

gubar

PS if you like the video, it'd be nice if you thanked him in his comments section user added image
