Control vertex problems

Hello everyone! I'm new to maya and learning it as a hobby.

I run into a problem with control vertices. When I select one of the vertices, the neighbouring ones also light up, but with a different colour. When moving the selected vertices, the neighbouring vertices will also move in relation to it. This also happens when selecting faces/ edges. Could there be something which I have clicked by mistake? I have tried to restore the default settings but does not solve the problem.

Any help will be appreciated;

Thanks in advance!! :-D
