knee preservation

so im going through this rigging tut and it has me making a knee preservation joint with the expression

bind_L_kneePreserve01.rotateZ = bind_L_knee01.rotateZ * -0.5;

now for all intents and purposes it does what its supposed to except it snaps instead of really does a fluid transition. Does anyone have experience with expressions and scripting that could help me out with this?
