Grizzly Bear

Hi all,

I've just completed Jay's 'Modeling Quadrupeds for Production' tutorial where he models a dinosaur. It's fantastic. Now I thought I'd have a shot at creating a grizzly bear using the same techniques to see how much I've actually learned.

I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions about what you reckon is or isn't looking good as I go along.

it's looking good! look up a head modeling tutorial and study some topology and you'll end up with an insane grizzly bear. Or you could export what you've got to mudbox and work with it there. user added image

this image shows a great example of topology, topology means how your loops are set-up.

keep it up!

OK, so here is day two. Really started refining the legs and feet. Pretty happy with how it's all coming together. I never looked so closely at a grizzly bear before (kinda hard to tell what's going on under all that fur at times).

That's funny. Modeling stuff in Maya really makes you pay attention to details.... Sometimes I find myself looking at stuff in the real world wondering how I would go about modeling it! haha

Still more refining. This time on the head. The ears are interesting as they can rotate 90 degrees outward and sit sideways on the head. How does this affect the skinning and rigging of something like that? Would it need to be modeled differently to allow for animation?

Just about finished I reckon.user added image Spent some time detailing the mouth adding toe nails and tweaking the snout and I'm pretty happy with how it's all turned out. Any suggestions before I go ahead and sew his two halves together?

Looking good! I suggest adding a small tail user added image I think the mouth eyes and nose could do with a bit more tweaking and detail. Give the brows a bit more definition and shape the upper lip to hang over the lower at the sides. Push it to the next level.

Looking good, looks like a pretty happy bear, with the way the eyes and mouth are

For reference (no idea what sort of bear it is, but a bear's a bear):

I'd guess some sort of Asian Black Bear or whatever it is that you see on the infomercials about those horrible "zoos"
