Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Shader or Render Problem Please Help

Mostly Im trying to make leaves and the shader says that it works, but when I render it it still shows a white background with leaves. Tried to figure this out for a few days and its either the render or the shader, but I have deleted the shader and tried it again but no go. I also opened a new project to see if it was the file I was working on and still same result. Any help would be awesome! Textures were made in photoshop and saved as Targas since my maya doesnt like jpegs. user added image

A couple of ways to get around this. One way is to add an alpha channel to the diffuse texture in PS (file34). Then you can connect the outtransparency of the diffuse texture node to the transparency of the blinn. Another way when using a straight mask texture (file35) is to connect the outcolor of the mask to the transparency of the blinn. Just remember white is transparent, black is not. You can invert the mask texture in PS, or select the invert option under the "Effects" tab of the file node in the attribute editor or can you can add a reverse node between the file and the blinn.

You will also have to mask the specular reflections or else you will get unwanted highlights from the transparent sections.

It's your Mental Ray preferences. Go into Window>Settings/Preferences>Preferences and in the "Rendering" category, check on "use Maya style alpha detection"(or something like that).
