volume fog + light linking?

Trying to create light fog for stage lights in mr. Using a cube volume primitive.

Problem: how do I get the cube volume to only be illuminated by my stage spot lights, and NOT the other lights in the scene?

I tried linking the cube to ONLY the stage lights, but it still reacts to all lights in the scene.

Apparently, it's more complicated than simple light-linking?
