hi, just a quick q.

how to get matte/plastic (dont knw what it's called) effect in maya?...coz i love watching 'beware the batman' and 'starwars the clone wars'...n wondering how to get them...tqs

That looks pretty simple. I'm sure that you can get there with a Blinn but since I use Mental Ray I'm partial to mia_materials. In this case, I'd just use a charchoal gray diffuse color. And to avoid the hit to render times with true blurred reflections(plus the ref image is a cartoon), I chose to turn on "highlights only". Low reflectivity and high reflection blur(low glossiness) for that nice matte finish.

...tqs for the help but does lighting (3point light) play a part well?...im bad at lighting and rendering...will try with those settings...

Lighting and environment are most definitely important if you want your shaders to look good. Another thing is working in the proper color space so look into linear lighting.

You dont need to be an expert on lighting to get a nice result, try out lighting your scene with HDRI images, your object will catch the brighters parts of the image and make that the light source.

also if you are using mentalray there are many presets to choose, like rubber.
