IK/FK method preference?

I'm trying to get an idea of which method of IK/FK blending is preferred by most people and why.

There's the simple, built in ikHandle with the IK blend channel.

Or there is the custom rig with 3 joint chains. Right? Other than the former being much simpler what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
