Basic Question - Tranforming components after object has had transforms frozen

Hello All,
Transitioning from another software and have been using Maya for a wee while but this is really bugging me.

1) create a cylinder
2) rotate it an amount (doesn't matter how much by!)
3)Freeze transforms
4)Select an edge loop
Question - How can I get manipulators to be the correct orientation to the components.
or
What is a workaround.

I have held down the W key and LMB clicked and tried many options with no joy.
This issue become more frustrating when you have a more complex mesh!

Don't freeze transformation and set the move tool to object or along rotation axis............dave

Thanks for the reply, the character model has been prepped fro rigging, with transforms already frozen.
I'm simply am just sliding some edge loops along some of the fingers.

Does anyone know of a workaround to say pick a reference object instead then

OK, whilst I haven't found a solution to altering the manipulators orientation, I have found a feature (I believe this is new to 2016)
In the move tool palette or through the marking menu (W & LMB) find transform constraint - Edge or surface slide.
