Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Poly Model + Rendering

Oke, I have major problems with this piece of chess. It is a poly model. But I am unable to get rid of the jagged edges ! (see image)

In the render globals I have the following settings (Next Image).

How can I make a smooth chess piece, nice round ?

Post up a wire if you can...

You can add a smooth to it, but you might want to add a few edges around the existing edges so when you smooth it you have a nice clean edge..

It's not your render settings. You just need more geometry. With NURBS you can tweak the tessellation settings but with Poly's you need more geometry. Try subdividing or smoothing or maybe even converting to SubD's...

Select your object, then under the polygons menu, use the smooth function to achieve the continuity your after. Posting a wire would be a good idea.

edit..
hah, we all posted a minute after eachother, now thats service.

Can't you also soften individual edges using normals- soften/harden? Can also be handy.

Yes, but it won't really help with border edges.
It usefull for getting rid of that faceted look.

Yup, true but it doesn't work for closeup shots...

WOW! You have WAY to much geometry for that shape. You can have cube with one face on the side. Its flat. Make it 100 faces on one side, its still flat. Tweekign may be in order.

Heh its not good when your wireframe is a solid color.
try not so many iterations of smooth.

seeing the faces might by a normals problem, trying softening them as witchy said.
