Skin Weights

Can anyone help me find how to save skin weights of a character so that i can import it after making some changes in skeleton.
When i tried the "save skin weights" option, it is saving in the form of some skin map. And i'm not finding any option to import those skin maps and apply back to that character.

I'm having the same problem... I want to be able to adjust the skeleton without loosing all the work I've done on weight painting. Any help greatly appreciated!
