In vray:
Connect the normal map to the bump & change the bump map type to tangent space.

If you re using a mia material, try to tune the Fresnel reflection under BRDF.

Instead of "mia material" try mia material x or x passes.

Playing with photons ? Painful part of lighting. Try to avoid it :(
