good looking shield

Hi guys can you take a look at this animation (disregard the modelling) I just want to know how to improve the look of the shield is there any tips/tricks I could use to make it look more professional looking

oops didnt realise how big it was, anyway after the beam fires up into the air it starts to create the spherical shield like so
