character modeling

What is the best method and the easiest to pick up when your new to modeling characters.Is it box modelling, spline method, nurbs shaping then change to poly's for detail,or socking.

There isn't really a best method, it's personal preference. My suggestion would be to try each method on something pseudo-simple to see what gives you the results you want quicker...maybe a basic "head" tutorial. Try box modeling (poly proxy) or poly-by-poly or nurbs-convert to poly method, roughing out a head shape. You'll find as you go, maybe certain methods are better (quicker) for certain types of objects but it's really up to the individual and what he latches on to.
